Science Fair - Writing up your experiment

Hi all

This afternoon we did some work with an experiment that taught us about the way we should be writing up our experiments and presentations for the science fair...as well as learning about balls and the height of their bounce.

Below is what we did.  Please use it as an example of the kinds of things you should be including in your science fair presentation.

Below is a typed version of our new science fair wall display on the same subject.  It will give you more insight into what is expected.

Equipment:  What you need to perform your experiment.
Softball, soccer ball, hokeyball, tennis ball, meter ruler.

Method: How to perform the experiment.

You have a meter ruler and these four balls.
hockey ball          soft ball          tennis ball          Soccer ball
To  carry out, a "fair test" to find out which ball will bounce the highest when it is dropped (not bounced)  from a height we will need to only change the ball each time, not the height from which it is dropped.

Hypothesis:  What you think is going to happen when you carry out the experiment.

“I think the tennis ball is going to bouce the highest because I think it has the highest rubber content and I
        know that rubber is bouncy.”

Results: Writing down what you found out.

In our individual tables in our books.

Analysis and conclusion:  Commenting on what happened, why you think that happened and what that means.  Always relate this to your hypothesis.
“We found that the tennis ball bounced the highest.  I think was because it has the highest content of rubber in it” (I will know this because it will relate back to my background knowledge and research that I have done). This tells me that if I am wanting a ball with bounce I need to look for one with lots of rubber content and definitely not much hard plastic content as we found the hockey ball did not bounce very high at all.

It is now week 4 of Term and you should be getting started on writing up your experiment and gathering the things you need to start on it.

Happy experimenting!
Mrs Clarke

  1. Looking coward to Week 10, and seeing what everyone comes up with.
